| Hi Pete, I've been playing a couple of hours a day for about two years and your instructional dvd's have been very useful. I've made some progress I'm proud of, but now I feel it would be a good idea if I had in-person lessons. Finding the right teacher on your own seems daunting, and I was hoping you could recommend someone you respect in my area. In any case, thanks for the good music and the encouragement. Regards, Len Bernstein NYC |

Len; Unfortunately I don't know anyone in your area who teaches. However I would suggest going to your church or synagogue and ask around. That's a great way to meet other players and teachers. Also, check your local music stores and see if they might have someone that you can meet. Good luck! |
| If i could add to what I wrote below, perhaps you can market that instructional dvd "THE MASS FOR FINGERSTYLE GUITAR" It would be unique in that it would grab anyone doing a traditional church service! |

Great idea! |
| Loved your "On Eagles Wings". Could you do a instructional dvd on "Catholic Hymns". So many of us would like to do things in mass, including a "Lamb Of God" or a "Hallelujah". Songs Like "Be Not Afraid" or "City Of God" are begging for a professional fingerstyle interpretation. I believe you're just the man to do this! P.S. Congrats on your magnificent recovery! We've been rooting for you! |

| Hello Pete, I just want to say I hope you are doing ok. I just got word that your upcoming concert in Evanston, that I was so looking forward to, has been canceled. Me and my guitar buddy, Gregg, and our wives were coming to see you and really excited about it. However, as disappointing as that is, I am more concerned about how you are doing. I hope you are feeling better soon. I'm sorry you had to cancel due to health reasons but anyone that has been reading your blog would certainly understand the issue. Hang in there and I hope the doctors can help you feel better - and reliably so for the future! Take care and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Kind regards, Jerry |

| Hi Pete. I'm a guitarist/singer in the San Diego area and I have two questions. First, have you ever used the Radial PZ-Pre and, if so, what do you think of it? Second, I'm building my own home studio and I remember reading an interview where you indicated that Neumann KM84's were great recording mics for acoustic guitar. Are they still your preferred recording mics for acoustic guitar? Thanks for your help. Brad. |

Brad; No. Never even heard of the Radial PZ-Pre. I still love my old 84's. You've got to be careful not to buy the new ones. They are in no way the same as the older ones. I also use some old KM-254's and they are KILLER mics! Absolutely. |

| Hello Mr. Huttlinger, It seems that you can play anything with strings, eh? Saw you years ago at several JD concerts. (still miss him, sigh) and was wondering if you know of any place I could find banjo tablature for his songs. I have searched and searched and searched. Would be happy to purchase-- if I could just find it out there! There doesn't seem to be much in the way of banjo for his stuff- and it is definitely in earlier recordings of songs he did. Any suggestions? Thanks for doing what you do! Have my young son "tuned in" to you now and he is loving it all! Peace, kelly |

Hi Jim; Congrats! You've got yourself a very fine guitar. You can tell for sure if it was mine by checking on the label on the inside. I think Chris wrote something in there about it being built for me. Yes, I did have it set up for flatpicking. |
| Pete, it goes without saying that your DVD's and TAB books are second to none and have helped me considerably over the years. Last year I purchased the CD/TAB book for "First Light..A Pete Huttlinger Christmas" and had a blast playing those tunes for folks over the holidays. I initially became interested when you put the TAB for "Go Tell It on the Mountain" on your site before the book was released. Anyways, with the holidays approaching I wanted to see if you could post the TAB for "The Christmas Song" Your arrangement for that particular tune is fantastic but my futile attempts to learn it have come up empty. I would gladly pay for the tab but thought to suggest posting it to the site as an early Christmas gift to the fans! |

| Hi Pete - Love your Homespun Tapes. Have every one of yours. I'm having a 12 string built for me and wonder if I should go with 12 frets to the body and a shorter scale for a more mellow sound and better play-ability. Thank you. Peter Hofer |

Peter; Thanks so much for getting the Homespun lessons. I don't think that a 12 fret guitar will make much difference with a mellower sound a play-ability. I think those things are up to the builder. Tell him/her that you want it to sound mellow (For a 12-string - of course!) and that you want it very playable. |

| Happy Tuesday. I attended the Fur peace ranch last halloween, and took Jorma's class. There, I was able to meet you, and regretted not taking your class. I have noticed you are back next year! So, if I take the Mandolin for guitar players class, can I prepurchase the book that the webste mentions to get a head start, or, what level of fingerpicking is acceptable to attend your other class on fingerpicking. The level descriptions for each class seem to vary. I am by no means able to play anything that I have heard you play in the past, but can do some of Jorma's style. Fred; Thanks in advance for your interest in my class. You can definitely purchase the book any time day or night from my web site. But... since it's been so long since you posted this I think I'm correct is assuming that you were not able to study with me because I got pretty darned sick and couldn't do either class last year. I will be doing one this year from March 30 - April 2 and I can't wait. If you ever want to do one of my classes I request strongly that you at least be able to play barre chords. It's very important that you can play without your fingers hurting because we'll be doing a lot of playing over the course of the weekend... |

A question about your use of the Aura technology: I know that you have used an internal mic as part of your mix with the Collings. Since Fishman states that the Aura is designed to work best with a UST, do you no longer include the mic? Whatever you do, it sounds GREAT! I also not some new for you usage of delay. | Hi Pete, I've been working on the Bossa Nova pattern in your 'Essential Exercises for Fingerstyle Gtr' and I am having trouble with bar 12. The tablature doesn't seem to match up with the video (and also the music). The TAB has a D note in the bass but I believe it should be a Dflat. Is that correct? Sorry if I am tedious. While there are voice exercises for keeping your vocal chords limber ... what are some exercises for keeping your fingers limber? AND, even more importantly (I never thought this was possible, but) I am playing the callouses off of my fingers! Is there something you can do to keep your callouses "flexible" so they don't separate? Do you use a special kind of lotion? |

| Hey Pete, Bought and sat down with your Better Practicing Homespun DVD, and I appreciate your philosophy and tips. All I think you could add is a schedule for guitarists of various levels for actual minutes spent on each for 1, 1 1/2, 2 hrs total practice a day. Think runner or cyclist training schedule. I guess most students may not be so disciplined, and do have a human teacher who gives them guidance... (You know, I believe one of the strengths of the Learn and Master expanded DVD series is that he tapes entire practice sessions in addition to every lesson.) Despite your warning, the morning after my first slow run-through of the final Exercises for Both Hands I woke up with a strained interosseous muscle in the left hand index-middle web and can't fret with my index finger. Right hand still works fine, and makes for some interesting left index-less fingering choices. Live and learn. What are your thoughts on the Varigrip exerciser? No matter how much we practice, we still have time in the car, meetings... Do you believe it adds to strength and flexibility? Ever seen a schedule for use (there I go again). Thanks for your great tunes and performances and devotion to teaching us civilians play some guitar music. Warren Anderson San Antonio, TX |

I had stumbled upon them on the internet when I first got serious about playing 2.5 years ago (been fumbling around for almost 30 years). I am really enjoying learning all those great songs, and I hope you are going to do more volumes in the series. | Hello Pete I've been listening to your playing on Youtube etc. Great playing! I'm a jazz player - have used archtops & 335 over the years. But I'm contemplating working on fingerstyle and getting a nice acoustic - the Collings OM1C seems a nice choice. I'm just wondering about short scale though - as I have small hands and it just makes those long stretch chords a bit easier. If you have time to comment are you able to give any indication of any tonal difference between the standard scale and SS models? Best wishes. Roly |

| Hi Pete, Hope you're well. I'm a Professional Musician and Teacher aged 44. I started on Ukelele at 6 and Guitar at 10 years old and have been very privileged to have been taught by the best in the Business. I have just seen your DVD entiltled 'A Guitarist's Guide to Better Practicing' which is superb! I couldn't have written it better myself. It's an area like yourself I'm very keen on getting my Students to practice more effectively, since I believe, that if they don't get the 'How to practice' ethos right, then the Student won't sadly improve. It's Quality over Quantity. I was very lucky to have been taught this by one of my Teacher's who was taught by the one and only John Williams. I've sadly met fellow Professionals who sadly don't understand the concept of effective practicing. I may be doing a 5 year course to become a Professor of Music and in particular The Guitar, so I will probably do my Dissertation/Thesis on Effective Practicing. Do you find this method Pete can be used for all Guitars-Classical, Electric and as we've seen the Acoustic? I had a very bad hand injury when I was younger sustaining damage to my Right hand which could have been very serious. I used to do alot of Heshing and Shredding, but I find my Right Hand aches and I find it very difficult to reach my former speeds. Have you got any fellow Professional advice in order to overcome the aching of the Right Hand? I appreciate your time Pete and like yourself I'm very busy too. Please stay in touch by all means. | PETE! Speaking of metronomes (below), and your much-appreciated command to "Use it OFTEN" -- let me say that I've worn out my mom's Franz electric metronome (a relic now) and now use a digital, battery-powered job that's so loud it sounds like rifle fire. I *do* use my metronome often. Maybe TOO often. Probably 4/5ths of my practice time... Well, either the metronome or a drum machine. Thus, my question: do you think one can over-use the time machine? Stefan Grossman chides his students to NEVER use one - really! And no offense to him, but listening to his playing, it's clear that he doesn't use one. "Nice and ragged," he says. Bleh. Not for me. But some players claim that having TOO keen a sense of perfect time can somehow lead to problems when jamming with people who have a vague sense of it -- or something like that. And this is reason enough, they say, not to play TOO much with your Dr. Beat. I say bool sheet. What say you, Pete? Peace, Bela |

Dave; The thing to remember is that when you are reading music with a capo on the guitar, the capo immediately becomes fret zero. (because you cannot play below the capo) So your A note is still considered to be on Fret 5 - but it means five frets above the capo. If the music does not state to use a capo but you see me using one on the DVD - I think you can guess which is correct.... You've got it! Use the capo. Cheers, Pete |

The control of string squeek starts with the hands. In particular, the left hand. You MUST lift the finger, move quickly and them place them down again. That's the simple version. Try taking a couple of lessons from a classical guitar player. It could be a big help. |
| Pete, In the "Better Practicing" video, you're using a Boss "Dr. Beat" metronome. Or "super-metronome," maybe! I want one, too -- but I can't tell from the ad copy whether you have to be a drummer to benefit from the "rhythm coach" function. And Boss makes a less-expensive Dr. Beat that does a lot, but it doesn't have Rhythm Coach. Is the top-of-the-line model (like yours) worth the dough? I'm thinking it probably is, but would like your comments, since you own one. : )

It is a Dr. Beat. I have a few different metronomes. I've not used the Rhythm Coach function. I make up my own rhythm exercise and use some learned from drummer friends. Get the less expensive one and USE it OFTEN. |
| Heard you at Carnegie Hall. You put on a great show. The songs you did with Mollie Weaver were great. Why don't you do a CD with her. That song you did with her (I'm not sure of the name)I think it was "Where the time goes" was beautiful. How about teaching that one. Your guitar work with her was great. I hope you perform up here next year. Thank you, Rich |

Thanks so much. The song is called Who Knows Where The Time Goes. I love playing guitar for Mollie. We are thinking about doing a CD together. Maybe later this year. By the way, Mollie Weaver will be singing on the Grammy Awards Show this weekend. She'll be singing with Dave Matthews. Tune in! |
| Hi Pete, Had a great idea, maybe you have thought of this, but, what about having individual downloads of what is included in your instructional dvds. I may not be motivated to buy the whole dvd, because I am not interested in every song but I would sure be interested in one of two of them? Any thoughts on this. I am a big John Denver fan have 2 of your dvds but, just want a few songs from the other 2 dvds. I find your dvds very helpful. |

That would be a question for the good folks at Homespun Tapes. www.homespuntapes.com They are the ones who produce the lessons. |
| Hello again Pete, Thanks for the reply to my message from 12/18/09. I'm working this piece (Darcy's Guitar) up based on what you said. The student who brought this to me may be auditioning for a guitar camp, and I think this may be a good one for that. It takes precision to get this right, and I think it's a good showpiece. I wasn't sure where the manuscript came from at first, but he says he bought it here, so that's good. I should probably buy my own copy just to be fair, huh? I'll just go ahead and do that. In any case, I'm trying to play it to what I hope would be your satisfaction. I'd like to get this just exactly perfect, and in that light, I have a number of questions about left hand fingerings. Here are just two. These are based on watching a YouTube video of you performing live. First, it looks to me like the first time you go to the Em in the B section that you're picking up the low B with the 2 finger; pretty much a regular Em shape. But the second time you come to the Em you're using the 1 finger to get the same low B. This makes perfect sense given the positions leading into each Em. They're both comfortable and logical. Am I seeing this correctly? Second question is about the single note rundown that leads back into the A section. It looks like you're catching the C-B pull-off with the 1 finger, and the A-G with the 2 finger, but then you take the 4 finger out of play and catch the F# with the 3 finger, and then land on the low G with the two finger. Then you transition right away to the G starting position with the 3 finger on the low G when you start the beginning melody and hit that D note in the melody. I hope that all makes sense. Once again, am I seeing this correctly? I studied classical guitar in college, and these are the things that we concentrated on to get pieces up to performance level. I'm also curious about the right hand fingerings. I'm thinking about writing what I think is best out on the tab portion of the manuscript. I do that in the p-i-m-a classical way of doing things. If I get it done, would you like to see it? I'd be happy to scan it and email it to you. I hope you don't mind these exacting questions. I sincerely appreciate anything you can do to help. My best to you and yours in the New Year. Thanks Pete! Kurt Johnsen |
