Pete, I suppose you hear this all the time, but...I've been struggling to teach myself guitar for a bit less than two years now. Spent time with several DVD's and tapes and learned the basics. One day I ran across your John Denver instructional DVD number one...I think I have gotten more out of that one DVD in the last month than nearly all the rest combined. Your teaching method of step by step on the harder licks is the best. I've ordered several more of your DVD's?my wife thinks I?m nuts. I started playing guitar and guitar on my 65th birthday and before the first year was out I was able to play bass with a small bluegrass band, and during the next year I taught myself enough mandolin to get by as well, but the guitar was still challenging me; thanks to your DVD I think I'm finally playing something that actually sounds pretty darned good. I will be at it a full 2 years the end of February 07. By the way, for any other old farts out there, it?s never too late to get into some serous pickin? and strummin? if you will work at it. R. Pete, Happy New Year!! Saw you at the JD Tribute (both shows) in Aspen back in October. The orchestra really added a lot. Top notch!! Got any tips for that Bm7 chord in McGuire's Landing. I got your Solo II DVD as a gift and that's the only problem I've run into. It's a toughie!! Thanks, Paul

Hi Pete, I recently stumbled across your music on ITUNES and have been listening to your CDs non stop since donwloading from there. I've been stuck in a musical rut with the guitar for awhile and your playing is certainly an inspiration. Since you did spend some time in the Boston area, albeit a while ago, I was wondering if you might know of any good fingerstyle guitar teachers in the Boston area that you'd recommend ?? I've been looking for awhile but haven't been able to find anyone. Keep up the great work, would love to see you perform in Boston some time. thanks

Dear Pete; I wanted to write and tell you how much I love the DVD of Jim Croce's Music. Jim & Maury were quite a pair . Many people never knew the musical genius of each of them ! Maury was not only one of the most talented people to ever pick up the guitar but, he was also a fabulous piano player too. I hope to get the John Denver DVD's next . Maybe someday I'll be able to play 1/1000th as good as you . I wish you and your family a Happy,Safe and most Blessed New Year. God Bless- Thom Miller

Hi Pete. I stumbled across you playing Superstition last month on You Tube, and rushed right out and purchased both of your Instructional DVDs. I am just finishing up on Josie. Except for that darn chickin' pickin thing! It's taking some time to get that part. What a wonderful arrangement. I was wondering if you had any plans to produce an instructional video with Superstition on it. I see there is a book with the transcription. I will order that tonight. It would be great to have a quality video of you playing it. Also, do you have any plans to join up with Tommy again at some point in the future? He's doing TommyFest in Elizabethtown in a month. Why don't you swing by? You guys should do a workshop together. Man, that would be the ultimate musical experience. Love your arrangement of 'Tis So Sweet... Merry Christmas! Gene

Hi Pete, Hope all is well. I was listening to John Denver's "Christmas in Concert" (Washington, D.C.) CD today, and was thinking how exciting and fun it must have been for you to be playing in that show, with the orchestra and children's chorus. Did you play any of the music that sounds like electric guitar or did you stick with acoustic? Did you play in many other Christmas shows with John? Anyway, I am very much looking forward to your new CD; can't wait to hear it. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Erin. Best wishes, David

Ceburn - The main guitar I play a Collings OM1 Cutaway. Mahogany back and side with a Sitka Spruce top. The other one I play has an Adirnondak Spruce top (also called Red Spruce if the wood is not grown in the Adirondaks). They both have nut widths of 1 3/4". While you are at it, get some Elixir Phosphor Bronze strings. That way you won't be changing strings all the time. ;-) Pete

Hi Pete, I have noticed on all of your DVD's that you play with two different type Collings. I believe you said that the OM-1 was your favorite for everyday playing. I want to purchase the OM-1 Cutaway from Collings and I want to order the same exact one with which you play most in your DVD's. I think you said the top was Sitka, but I know some where that you mentioned Englemann. Could you please give me the specs so I will know exactly what to order. I want to get it right since it is hefty purchase! Thanks. I own all of your DVD's. What else can I say, you are terrific....

Hi Pete, For a New Years resolution, I decided to begin playing a musical instrument. I couldn't decide on the piano or guitar, so I bought a $80 casio piano and a second hand guitar for $125.(an acoustic Alvarez). I began both instruments with the beginning of the new year figuring I would decide which one I would persue full force... the guitar won! I have more books on guitar...and piano where I can honestly say " I have every book I need to learn how to play guitar...and the piano. As I scrolled through homespun's catalog, your CD caught my eye. When it finally arrived, as with all the other cd's I order, the first thing I did was play the lesson WITHOUT the instrument. I can't believe ALL the extremely useful information that you formatted on one single disk!!! GREAT STUFF!!! Cutting it short, my first order of business for the new year is to reward myself for sticking with my resolution by purchasing another guitar. I couldn't decide on an electric, 12 string, or another acoustic maybe? Your cd answered my question. My next guitar that I will be buying will be a classic guitar with nylon strings with the fret board being 2". I will keep in contact with you, that is, if you don't mind? That's all for now... back to practice....and thanks!

Hi Pete, I couldn't resist commenting about the Classical Gas comment. It struck me as a little humorous as written - "a song called Classical Gas." :) Anyway, The original arrangement by Mason Williams is outstanding... and sounds as good today as it did years ago. Pete, First of all, just listened to Superstition on You Tube....a couple of renditions.....AWESOME. Also had a clip of a British gig with you and another John Denver band member.........a keeper as well.
I'm a friend of Les'....bought the AER 60 on your recommendation and it's GREAT ! Everyone's amazed at the clarity and crispness of its sound.
Question, know you play Collings, but looking at upgrading from my acoustic electric Seagull (sounds pretty good for the $800 price) and was leaning towards a used upper end Taylor....614 or 814....I really like the sound of the ESS electronics. Recommendations once again?

I know the original pickup was a Fishman Matrix under saddle, but, he had it replaced with a sound hole pickup and I like the sound of it, especially since he fingered picked allot. Kevin

Hi, Pete! I'm a 24 year old Elementary School teacher, and have been an enormous JD fan all of my life! I play 6 and 12 string guitars as hobbies, and find myself playing JD stuff most of the time. I was wondering if you plan to make a Learning JD songs for guitar DVD #4, and if so, if you might be able to include some songs for us teachers so we can use them to enrich learning (perhaps Windsong, Sing Australia [older students], or Amazon). I have all three previous versions of your DVDs, and I found them ideal for learning John's songs! I already plan to play Calypso with my students when we start studying bodies of water. :) Thanks for your time, and best wishes from Mr. Hicks' 4th grade class.

Hi Pete. I just wanted to let that I recently purchased your DVD 'Essential Exercises for the Fingerstyle Guitar, and I am very impressed with the work and material you presented. When I called Homespun Tapes, I asked them for help with right hand bass techniques, and after some discussion about my level of profiency and what I hoped to accomplish, this DVD was recommended. EUREKA! All the exercises and work are easily transferred to the bass, (I play a 5 string Benavente Vintage Vortex). There sure is a lot of meat on that bone, in the first 5 minutes you cover material that may take me a year to master. I really feel like that DVD is allowing me to make the next quantum leap in developing right hand technique. Thanks for the help, and congrats on such an excellent lesson. You are right, life is good. Keep up the good work! Also, I gave you a cheap plug on www.Talkbass.com, a bass friendly forum I hang on, and recommended the DVD to some other players for their benefit. Best regards, Thor

I've been a big fan of Pete's since he allowed Fingerstyle Mag to publish Storm In the Valley. As a fly fisherman AND guitar picker, he's my hero; probably a better fisherman, for sure a better guitar player! The website is terrific; I am from Utah, spent several years as a commercial/sport fisherman in Alaska, now living in Asia and spending not enough but some time in Kamchatka and Mongolia with an 8 weight flyrod chasing 100 lb. Caiman and still picking my Lowden, Taylor, Martin, Thompson and other misc. instruments. Larry Pattis got me into this, but you, Pat Donohue an El Mcmeen keep me interested. I saw Eric Clapton in concert last night. All I could think was that I would rather be watching Pete (Even better since he was working with LeAnn Rimes last night). Of course everyone on the Clapton stage oozed talent, and the music was flawless, but they were not entertainers. It was just a bunch of men standing on a stage playing their instruments. Pete is an entertainer and teacher. He works the room, says "hi" to people he knows, tells great stories of the road, and teases us by letting us think for just a moment that we could be as good as he is. Love your work Pete!

Also, if you EVER give another workshop/concert etc. anywhere in Kentucky, or within 500 miles of Indianapolis (where I live) PLEASE let me know. YOU are WELL WORTH the drive. Hope all is well in your life, and keep making that great music. You carry along with your great talent the wonderful musical traditions of so many fine musicians, a tradition which I fear may start to die out sometime in the future (I HOPE I'M wrong). From one of your great admirers (I saw you at the John Denver memorial tribute concert outside Washington, D.C. just months after John's terrible accident). Thanks for helping to carry on his music, and you do SO MUCH MORE !!! Bob Jackson

Dear Pete: I was introduced to your amazing talents by a mutual friend of ours, Jim Mills of Southern California. I urge you to contact Route 66 organizers for next year's show if you're interested in playing for old car and truck buffs, that is. I am a brand new volunteer with this organization and work the event this Friday. Crossroads Rotary Club, of which I am a new member, also invites you to their meetings, held each Wednesday at the San Bernardino (Calif.) Hilton off of Hospitality Lane. If you're ever in town and would like a meal on me, call Scott Tudehope (TOOD-hope) at home: 909 899-3714. Scott

What a pleasant surprise I had this morning: I was listening to the local radio station when I heard the advertisement for the next edition of "Acoustic Storm". While telling us all about the featured artists I heard one of your songs playing in the background! What a joy first thing on a bleak rainy morning. I had to contact their website to ask them to feature you on their show, not just their ads. Take care,

Hey Pete.... I played guitar in the opposite country show one summer with you at Busch gardens (you were playing with Dave Grantham) back in the early 80s. I knew you were going to be a world-class guitarist even then based on how much talent you already had and your work ethic. I'm glad to see (and hear) that you're doing so well. Quick John Denver story... I was playing in an east coast area pop band back in the late 80s and we were in Erie Pa. John was doing concerts in the area and had made the hotel we were at his home base. He came into the bar and I was able to speak with him two or three nights in a row during my breaks. He was very easy to talk with and we had fun. I'm out of music now, but again I'm really glad to see you're doing so well. Keep playing. Thanks, Ken Gorman

Hi Pete: I Love the Homespun DVD's you have done of John Denver and Jim Croce songs, but I really, really wish you would do another DVD of your own fantastic solo guitar arrangements, like Rainbow Blues, Mill Creek and Superstition... I have your songbooks, but learning from tablature is rather slow going for me. Hope you tour the New England area again soon. Best Regards

By golly my wife Julie and I had a fine time last Friday night at Steve's Guitars. Your spirit in generosity with your music is inspiring. Your personable presentation and stories add a wonderful dimension to your own writing and arrangements. I am a neophyte guitar player, just about at my second year. I am working with your Guitarist's Guide To Better Practicing; Very, very helpful tutelage. I like in some tunes the way you let the strings sing for quite awhile, let them do their work, and then play over their decaying tone to harmonize with the passing sound figures. Then in other places you dampen 1-2 bass grooves and runs...nice work. I had asked you about the Chet Atkins style number you went out with on the above mentioned CD, you said that you would send that my way in PDF format, no need I just bought the 'Pete Huttlinger Collection' this evening. I will leave you with one question, have you ever played with David Grier???? That would be fret-board fire!
Thanks for the good time and I will see you at Jorma's.

Hi All, For the benefit of those who read previous message I should make it clear that I was joking when I said Pete couldn't keep up with me singing "Rock Island Line." Those of you who have heard Pete will know that he is world renowned for his fast finger picking action, nevertheless I suspect the way I sing, i.e. mainly out of key/tune and basically tone deaf he would struggle to keep up with me. Incidentally did/has anyone heard the celebrity version of "Rock Island Line? I think Eric Clapton and Ringo not to mention others were on it. In fact have any of you Americans heard it at all? I call it the speedy "Drunks Lament" All the best, Dave Wheatley

Pete, just received your "Essential Exercises for Fingerstyle Guitar." I have been a flat picker but have gotten to the point where all the guitar music I listen to and the instructional DVD's available for it are fingerstyle. Here is hoping I can make the transition. I am not a "young pup" anymore as they say. Anyway, the straight ahead approach of yours and the method to the exercises to train the link between the right hand and the brain is just what I was hoping for. I appreciate the method, the logic and your emphasis on the reasoning behind the excecises. Keep up the good work. Now about the 24" rainbow I had 40% into the net before he flicked his head and snapped my leader and left me with trembling legs in fast water on the Green River in Utah..... We looked each other right in the eye just a blink before the deciding instant. Happy picking and fishing.

Hello Pete, I performed at a local pre-4th of July block party this weekend. It was a chance to test out my Bose PA system in an outdoor setting and play some new tunes I learned from you. Apart from some songs by James Taylor and David Wilcox, I included three Croce tunes I learned directly from your Croce DVD. Operator, New York's Not My Home, and Time In A Bottle went over really well. I just wanted you to know that your material is being learned, rehearsed, performed, and appreciated by people out in the real world. Thanks Pete! Secondly, apart from JT and Croce, what six popular songs from the seventies singer/songwriter genre would you consider mandatory to include in a set from that era?? Glen

Glen;

We decided to take the "Ask Pete" section of the site down for a while. I'm too busy traveling to get to all the questions. A couple of people were getting upset that I wasn't getting to their questions quickly enough and were posting their unhappiness on my web site. It's supposed to be an area of the site to help people and I find that I'm not a very good baby sitter.

But don't worry "Ask Pete" WILL RETURN... Probably in late fall when things start to slow down a bit.

Well, now I can finally meet my repass with contentment and go wherever I am going (either to Heaven or "elsewhere") I finally saw Pete last night...and with Tommy Emmanuel. What a great collaborative event. I think a Martin Taylor/Pete Huttlinger Concert would be a great thing to investigate. His musicianship was exceeded only by his warmth and open sharing in the conversation we had on how he miked his guitar and how I can now improve mine/ I got home late and my wife was not even mad and didn't even ask for a note of explanation...she knew how long I had waited.
